Para-methoxyamphetamine is a potent hallucinogen belonging to the amphetamine class. It is sometimes referred to as 4-methoxyamphetamine, 4-MeOA, incorrectly as 4-MA (which should be saved for 4-MA (4-MeA) instead), and more often as PMA. PMA is a member of the substituted amphetamine chemical family. Nevertheless, PMA does not cause euphoria, stimulant, or entactogen effects like other modified amphetamines do. Since its introduction as Ecstasy in the 1970s, when it was marketed with PMMA, PMA has grown in popularity due to several hospital admissions and fatalities. Since there are typically few apparent effects, users tend to overdose by ingesting more or combining it with other narcotics. Dangerous side effects include irregular heartbeats, dehydration, abrupt and extremely high blood pressure and body temperature spikes, and occasionally severe disorientation.
