Meperidine is an opioid that is used to relieve severe pain. It works by preventing pain impulses from reaching your brain. This drug is an injection that you will receive from a clinician in a hospital or clinic environment, or you will be taught how to administer it at home. Take this drug exactly as advised. Demerol® is the brand name for meperidine.
What should I do with this medication?
This medicine is administered via injection into a muscle, beneath the skin, or into a vein. It is normally administered at a hospital or clinic.
If you receive this medication at home, you will be trained on how to prepare and administer it. Follow the directions exactly. Take your medication on a regular schedule. Take your medication no more often than recommended.
It is critical to dispose of spent needles and syringes in a sharps container. Do not dispose of them in a trash can. If you do not have a sharps container, contact your pharmacist or care team.
